Tuff rock formations and rock-cut spaces at Açıksaray archaeological site near Gülşehir
Açıksaray archaeological site near Gülşehir

Açıksaray (“Open Palace”) is a rock-cut archaeological site on the Nevşehir–Gülşehir road, about 3 km from Gülşehir. Its tuff formations preserve evidence from more than one period, making the landscape useful for understanding how communities reused Cappadocia’s soft volcanic rock.

Why Açıksaray matters

  • Rock-cut archaeology: numerous rooms and connected spaces were carved into the tuff.
  • Layers of history: official cultural-heritage information identifies Roman-period rock tombs and rock churches dating to the 9th and 10th centuries.
  • Religious landscape: research has described Açıksaray as a monastic settlement, while official interpretation also notes its importance as an episcopal centre.
  • Distinctive geology: mushroom-shaped fairy chimneys stand among the carved spaces and help distinguish the site from other Cappadocian valleys.

Reading the site

Açıksaray is best understood as a cultural landscape rather than a single monument. Rock tombs, churches, rooms and later religious features sit within the same eroded terrain. One rock-cut space is locally known as the Hacı Bektaş Veli Mescidi; its surviving mihrab is an important clue to later Islamic use. Dates and functions can differ from one chamber to another, so broad labels should be treated with care.

Access, safety and preservation

  • The site is outdoors, with uneven ground, exposed rock and limited shade. Sturdy footwear, water and sun protection are sensible.
  • Some carved spaces may be difficult to approach for visitors with limited mobility. Assess surfaces and gradients before proceeding.
  • Do not climb fragile formations, enter closed or unstable spaces, scratch the rock or touch painted and carved surfaces.
  • Access arrangements can change. Check current information with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s Gülşehir museum listing before setting out.
